PALM DESERT, CA — Four strokes separate the top four teams at the 2010 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf West/Central Super Regional hosted by Cal State San Bernardino at the Classic Club.
No. 16 Western Washington leads the field after shooting a 291 (3-over par) and have four players inside the top 20. WWU leads No. 5 Chico State, who fired a 292, by one shot and unranked Western New Mexico is in third at 293 thanks to a 3-under par 69 by co-leader Gordon Webb. Webb had four birdies, three on the back nine and just one bogie on the day.
Defending national champion and No. 20-ranked Sonoma State sits in fourth at 294. Two other schools shot under 300 as Dixie State finished the first day in fifth at 297 and 2010 California Collegiate Athletic Association champion and No. 21-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay fired a 299 to finish in sixth.
Leading the Red Storm was Kyle Chappell and Cameron Crawford (Sandy. UT, Jordan HS). They both shot even par 72. Conner Jones (South Jordan. UT, Bingham HS) shot 74, Chad Crowther (South Jordan. UT, Bingham HS) shot 77 and Taylor Reardon (Las Vegas. NV, Centennial HS) shot 78.
No. 6 Cal State Stanislaus’ Trevor Blair matched Webb’s 69 to top the leader board. Blair made up for a 38 on the front nine with a double bogie on eight, with a 31 on the backside with three birdies and an eagle on par-5, 560-yard hole 14.
Ryan Indovina (Cal State Dominguez Hills), David Schroeder (Ft. Lewis) and Jeremy Wendelken (Sonoma State) are all tied for third at 70. Patrick Boag (Western Washington) and Brandon Harkins (Chico State) also were under a par with a 71 and are tied for sixth.
Cal State Stanislaus is seventh at 300, nine shots back of the lead, and Pacific West Champion and No. 24 Grand Canyon is tied for 11th at 304.
