ST. GEORGE, UTAH - Dixie State College’s men’s golf team placed two players in the top-five overall as the Red Storm came away t-second finish at the 2009 Utah Collegiate Shootout, held Saturday at Sunbrook Golf Course. The tournament co-host DSC carded a two-round team total of 571 (-5), matching the total of fellow co-host Southern Utah, six shots behind team champion Utah State, which blistered the course with a minus-13 275 in the final round to leapfrog four teams to claim the title.

First round leader Utah Valley University finished fourth-overall with a two-round total of 576 (E), followed by Utah in fifth at 577 (+1) and Weber State in sixth at 582 (+6).

Freshman Nick Drost (Salt Lake City, UT/Brighton HS) paced the Red Storm with a runner-up finish with a two-round total of minus-6 138. Drost carded DSC’s low-round of the tourney with a 4-under 68, which came on the heels of a 2-under 70 to open his day. Meanwhile, senior Cameron Crawford (Sandy. UT/Jordan HS) placed t-fifth overall (-3) with rounds of 70 (-2) and 71 (-1), followed by junior Connor Jones in 22nd (+2 146), senior Taylor Reardon (Las Vegas. NV/Centennial HS) in 28th (+4 148). Junior Chad Crowther (South Jordan. UT/Bingham HS) and freshman Aaron Tuttle (Eldridge, IA), playing as individuals, each placed t-17th overall at +1 145.

“It was a great day, it was a fun field and our boys played good today,” DSC Head Coach Reed McArthur said. “It was great to be in competition with the [NCAA Division] I-A schools and it showed us that we could compete against them. Utah State played a great second round and deserved to win. We battled and came back after a tough opening round and we never gave up. This was a good tune up for us heading into Sonoma next week.”

Weber State’s Nick Despain won medalist honors in the men’s tourney as he shot a two-round total of minus-9 135. In the women’s three-team tournament, host SUU rallied from a four-shot, first round deficit to take home the team title. The Thunderbirds (+44 620) were 14 shots better in the second round to pass first round co-leaders Utah Valley (+47 623) and Weber State (+54 630), which finished second and third, respectively. T-Bird sophomore Sadie Palmer (-1 143) shot the low round of the women’s tourney with a second-round 3-under 69 to claim medalist honors.

Dixie State will close the fall portion of its 2009-10 schedule at the Sonoma State Invitational this Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 19-20, at the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club in Santa Rosa, Calif.
